All Blacks cap of Hawea Mataira (1910 - 1979), Hawkes Bay rep., New Zealand Maori player and dual-code New Zealand rep. in both union (Allblack #402) 1934-36 and league (Kiwi #277) 1939. The black velvet cap with silver braid and embroidered fern and dates 1934 and 1939 along with tassel; Hornig's Cuba St, Wellington label and Mataira's name label sewn inside. In 1936 Mataira was charged with the manslaughter of a team-mate, but was acquitted following the finding that the other had been the aggressor and Mataira had tried hard to avoid the altercation (see http://tinyurl.com/cnljuvv)
