A fine historical korowai cloak, double pair twining with two areas of tailored shaping. Crafted from dressed flax fibre (muka) and highlighted with orthodox double thrums of dyed black wool. Decorative elements are enhanced with contrasting woollen colour panel indicating a transitional style. The cloak was presented to Samuel Stanley Cox by local Maori as a token of their affection and appreciation. It was subsequently passed to Vincent Cox in 1933 and passed to his mother in 1954.
