A rare Reuben Watts silver and Maori portrait carved serpentine brooch, the rectangular panel carved with portrait of a Maori man, in raised rub-over mount, the serpentine shaped frame with hand beaten effect and cut-out flared detail, embossed facsimile maker's signature, 'Sterling' and engraved owner's initials within a diamond 'Ajb' to reverse. 5 cm x 3.6 cm. in original green velvet lined box with original maker's label 'Reuben Watts General Silversmith & Jewellery Work 41 & 42 Security Building, Queen Street, Auckland'. note: See 'Gold & Silversmithing in Nineteenth & Twentieth century N.Z.' by Winsome Shepherd, 1995, page 142 for illustration of a very similar example held in the Auckland Museum collection
