A Sherwin & Cotton dust pressed Emaux Ombrants portrait tile of Sophia Hinerangi, modelled by George Cartlidge, depicted with a Huia feather in her hair, wearing a dog skin patchwork cloak, a hei tiki and large pounamu pendant, 15 cm wide, 23 cm high. Sophia Hinerangi (1830-1911), know as 'Guide Sophia', the principle tourist guide of the famous Pink and White Terraces at Lake Rotomahana from the 1870s until their destruction during the Mt Tarawera volcanic eruption of 1886
