A Victorian pole screen, fitted with a leaf -shaped panel containing a finely embroidered ottoman Koran cover in gilded thread on black velvet ground, the panel reads: Basmalah ( Bismilla al-rahman al-rahim), 'In the name of G-D, the Compassionate, the Merciful' repeated in mirror form, mounted on a black lacquered stand with banded gilded accents (the panel) 63 x 49 cm, (overall) 155 cm. Provenance: Given to Lieutenant Colonel John Retallack Bassett DSO OBE, (1878-1958) by an Ethiopian Visiere as a tribute of thanks for his services in East Africa where he served with the Royal Berkshire Regiment.
