Description:
A Victorian pole screen, fitted with a leaf -shaped panel containing a finely embroidered ottoman Koran cover in gilded thread on black velvet ground, the panel reads: Basmalah ( Bismilla al-rahman al-rahim), 'In the name of G-D, the Compassionate, the Merciful' repeated in mirror form, mounted on a black lacquered stand with banded gilded accents (the panel) 63 x 49 cm, (overall) 155 cm. Provenance: Given to Lieutenant Colonel John Retallack Bassett DSO OBE, (1878-1958) by an Ethiopian Visiere as a tribute of thanks for his services in East Africa where he served with the Royal Berkshire Regiment. Thence by descent via his daughter Letitia May Bassett. Private Collection New South Wales.
