A Worcester porcelain dish, circa 1800, with gilt gadrooned rim, Burgundy border and a crest and motto for Dick, 'Spes Infracta' (Hope Unbroken), 20 cm diameter. note: the Dick family descended from William De Dick, the first magistrate in Edinburgh in 1296. Alexander Dick, born in Edinburgh in the 1790s arrived in Sydney as a free settler silversmith in 1824. in 1826 he opened his own business which proved to be a success until he had to serve a term at Norfolk Island, for receiving stolen silver spoons. in 1833 he was granted a free pardon and continued in his business until his death in 1843. Archibald Dick (b. 1715) immigrated to America where he served in the War of Independence. in his will he freed his slaves giving each a legacy. Elisha C Dick, one of his Sons was a friend of George Washington and attended his last illness. Provenance: Alan Landis Antiques, 2 Jul 1985.
