Photograph of the finish of the 1890 Melbourne Cup, won by Carbine black and white photograph by 'Akers & Co.Melbourne', with handwritten title to mount 'Hon. D.S. Wallace's Carbine Wins the Melbourne Cup. Distance 2m. Weight 10st. 5lb. Time 3m 28 1/4s. W.S. Higginbotham, Trainer. R. Ramage rider'. 1890', framed, some chips and loss to borders of photograph, foxing and discolouration to mount 39 cm x 60.5 cm. Other Notes: Carbine is considered to be one of the great greatest ever Melbourne Cup winners. His win in 1890 was exceptional, setting a record time despite carrying a record weight of 10 stone 5 lb (66kg). The time is all the more remarkable considering the poor condition of the track and that jockeys during this time still adopted an upright riding stance.
