A late 19th century French bronze elephant and ormolu mounted mantel clock, modelled as a caparisoned elephant with drum-shaped case surmounted by a chinaman in a howdah, the dial with white enamel cartouche plaques with blue Roman numerals, the twin barrel movement with count wheel strike on bell, raised on an ormolu rococo plinth base. The elephant stands amongst scattered flowers and shells. Fan absent from surmounting figure. Overhauled by ray Stenning c.1984. Height 56 cm See front cover
