He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on 9 September 1916. in February 1917 he was awarded the military medal (MM) for acting with extreme bravery in retrieving wounded and bringing up rations while under heavy machine gun fire near Gueudecourt, France. on 29 September 1917, Sgt Ferguson MM died of wounds received in action at Passchend'le, Belgium. He was 27 years of age.
