Description:
The 1891-92 Ashes Trophy, comprising a shield with full match scores and bowling analysis for 2nd Test at SCG, decorated with two bats & ball, and surmounted by two match-used cricket balls, one topped by a Lion, the other topped by a Kangaroo. A silver band around the left cricket ball engraved 'To Tom Green, From George Giffen & H.Trott, 2-2-92'. The band around the right cricket ball engraved 'To Tom Green, From George Giffen & Alec Bannerman, 2-2-92'. Mounted on a wooden stand, with shield-shaped plaque on front engraved with '(Kangaroo) V (Lion)'. A beautiful 19th century trophy. The Second Test at the SCG proved to be one of the most exciting ever, before a bumper crowd of 52,978 over five days. England’s George Lohmann despatched Australia’s first innings with his deceptive medium pacers, taking 8/58 as Australia stuggled to a meagre total of 144. Bobby Abel carried his bat for 132 not out in England’s reply of 307 and when Australia lost Harry Trott for one, and with Harry Moses still injured, it looked a foregone conclusion. However, with a terrific innings of 134 by Jack Lyons and another by Alick Bannerman (91), Australia reached 391. Lyons did his work in 185 minutes, while Bannerman took an excrutiating 451 minutes. Then, in the last 20 minutes, Charles Turner and George Giffen despatched three Englishmen, leaving them at 3/11, and with 218 to get. The next day only Stoddart (69) the England number four, offered any stout resistance and the tourists were out for 156 -a 72 run win for Australia. Turner (4/46) and Giffen (6/72) took all the wickets with a sustained attack of medium-pace bowling. Victory in the Sydney Test gave Australia a 2-0 lead in the three-match series against Lord Sheffield’s team, memorably captained by the 43-year-old colossus of cricket W.G.Grace
