Model Ship - the Great Republic (Boston 1853): a very large and striking model of the the Great Republic featuring highly detailed deck with handmade fittings, handpainted hull, useable rudder and intricate riggings. Also appears to have been wired for lighting with a battery terminal under the main deck. This impressive ship measures 2.45m x 1.65m. The age of this model is unknown however has been the centrepiece of the Kryal Castle ship collection for at least 30 years. The Great Republic was designed by Donald Mckay and remains to this day the largest wooden clipper ship ever built (102m long, weighed 4555 tons). Before her scheduled launch in 1853 fire tore through the harbour, destroying two ships and burning the Great Republic to the waterline. She was then salvaged and rebuilt with modified smaller sails.
