An impressive Chinese porcelain inverse baluster shaped jar decorated in underglaze blue with lotus flowers and foliate tendrils in the Ming manner, two bands of stylised lappet designs decorate the shoulder and rim, a band of stylised tall lappet encircles the foot. Raised on a dark rosewood stand of low square form detailed with lotus scrolls and incorporating scrolling feet. This large jar was bought at a charity auction at the Mandarin Hotel, Hong Kong, c.1975 (or earlier) by Lieutenant Kim Hall, Sotheby’s, auctioneer who conducted the charity auction for a price of 1,100 guineas. The jar and the base have been drilled for wiring as a lamp. Overall height 51.5 cm
