A woven tapestry of the Interpretation of the Victim, after the antique Decius Mus Cycle, circa 17th century Decius Mus, the classical legend as told by Livy depicting the Roman consuls Decius Mus and Titus Manilus preparing for battle against the Latins in 340 B. C., the story, according to Livy tells that both leaders dreamed that victory would belong to the side that lost one of its generals, Decius Mus thus describing the dream to his troops in which ultimately his death would prevail, woven in wool and silk, 380 x 428 cm. Note: Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was commissioned circa 1616 by Genoese noblemen to create a woven tapestry series. Developing the Decius Mus cycle, Rubens' paintings would serve as cartoons for the first series later woven in the workshop of Brussels tapestry weavers and dealers Jan Raes and Frans Sweerts., the Decius Mus cycle comprises eight cartoons, of which, the interpretation of the Victim is second in the cycle. 'During the seventeenth century the Decius Mus series was extraordinarily popular, and some twenty further sets were produced from Rubens' designs, but by other manufactories and with varying completeness and border decoration.
