Hadley's Quadrant English, 1767. Mahogany frame. Ivory name plate on frame arch. Made by Jn' Gilbert on Tower Hill London for Th' Waters Nov 13:1767. Boxwood scale graduated 0' to 90' by 1?. Mahogany index arm. Index mirror with two filter frames and one filter glass missing. Horizon and back horizon glasses. Sight vane single peep and back sight with single peep. John Gilbert and his Son John Gilbert (II) both of Tower Hill, London are listed in 'Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550- 1851' Gloria Clifton pg 112. No case. Contemporaneous with the quadrants which would have been used by the captains and officers of the first Fleet.
