A Carey of London Vernier Sextant circa early 1900's, with National Physical Laboratory, Kew Observatory, Richmond, Surrey original Certificate of Examination, the brass frame japanned, seven shades and mirrors, adjustable telescope socket, the index arm with magnifier and vernier, adjustable tangent screw and clamp, the brass arc with silver scale, 6 1/2 inches radius named Carey. London, with engraved name R Horne R.N., the dove-tailed mahogany case fitted with accessories, complete minus the key, and engraved R Height Provenance: Owned by Richard Horne, Commander on the Battleship 'Orion' at the Battle of Jutland, and mentioned in despatches by Admiral Sir John Jellicoe as 'An officer of great ability who conned the 'Orion' throughout the action with ability and skill.' Horne awarded the Depth S.O. ref. London Gazette 15/9/1916, and later retired as Captain of Height M.S. 'Barham' in the 1920's.
