Engravings: George Angas (1822-86): 'Gold Washing. Fitz Roy Bar, Ophir Diggings, 1851', tinted lithograph with hand-colouring, titled and dated in image, size 32 x 25 cm. Slight surface loss and repaired small tears to margins, minor soiling and foxing. Window mounted, overall 51 x 41 cm. Born in England, Angas migrated to South Australia in 1844 and then returned to England via New Zealand and South Africa, In 1849 he married in England and brought his new wife, Alicia Mary Moran, back to Australia. There were four daughters of the marriage. He went from South Australia to the gold diggings near Bathurst and in 1851 published 'Six Views of the Gold Field of Ophir' (Sydney) and 'Views of the Gold Regions of Australia' (London) lithographs drawn by Angas on the stone. In 1853 he was appointed secretary to the Australian Museum in Sydney, a position which he held until 1860
