Leather bound book dated 1821 belonging to Captain Chalmers of the Barque Auriga. the book entitled 'Sermons' was essential to a ships captain. It was used extensively for births and deaths at sea a common occurrence during the 19th century. Owners name Captain Chalmers Barque Auriga May 13 1838 and other writing in ink throughout the book. the Auriga was one of the immigrant ships bringing early settlers to Van Diemens Land.
