1935 Eastern Suburbs Premiership Blazer. A dark blue blazer with thin red and white stripes. Worn by Ross McKinnon. Ross McKinnon played in the centres for Eastern Suburbs from 1935-1938. In all he played 23 games for the club and was Dave Brown’s centre partner in the era where Easts racked up huge scores. Eastern Suburbs began a winning streak that lasted almost three years. On 22 June 1935, South Sydney beat Eastern Suburbs 18-11 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. On 25 April 1938 they again beat them 21-14. Between those two dates Eastern Suburbs did not lose a premiership match! In 1935 Ross made his Test debut against New Zealand and played a total of 8 Tests and 7 state games. He won the Premiership in 1935, 1936, & 1937 and later coached at Canterbury (1946-7) and Norths (1952-53 & 1959) The blazer bears a David Jones label with faintly typed name, R. McKinnon. It was made by Monogram Quality David Jones Ltd Sydney NSW and there here is no lining to the Blazer. There are two pockets, which have been removed. The team photo below shows both sitting proudly on the new premiership blazer. Both and are embroidered “N.S.W.R.F.L E.S.D.R.L.F.C” “Eastern Suburbs First Grade Premiers 1935.” “Club Champions 1935.” The image above shows the 1935 premiers wearing their jerseys and premiership Blazers. This period 1935-1937 was the Roosters second “Golden Period”. In 1935 the club lost just one game in the 16 premiership rounds and scored and unbelievable 599 points to 157. They defeated Souths 19-3 in the Final. Eastern Suburbs winger Rod O'Loan scored a club record of seven tries in a 61-5 win over University. Dave Brown's six tries in a 1935 game against Canterbury stands in equal third place in that list of all time try scorers, Easts winning the match 65-10. The standing record for most tries in one season also comes from 1935 being 38 by East's Dave Brown. Brown's 45 points in a 1935 match against Canterbury also stands as the record for most points in a match and the 15 goals he kicked in that match stands in equal first place as the most goals scored in a match. Dave Brown's season tally of 244 points stood for 34 years as the record points scored in a season until topped by Eric Simms in 1969. In 1936 Easts won 11 and drew two and remained undefeated through the semi-final and Final, defeating Balmain 32- 12. This team still ranks as one of the greatest from any club from any era.
