A Russian enamel 'Cup of Sorrows' Nicholas II Coronation commemorative beaker porcelain on copper with geometric decoration bearing the Russian eagle and initials for Tsar Nicholas II, 10 cm high. Note: the cup of Sorrows or Khodinka cup was produced to commemorate the Coronation of Tsar Nicholas II on May 18 1896. The cup was to be distributed to waiting crowds at Khodinka field the following day. However a rumour of a shortage of the cups lead to a mass panic and surge amongst the crowd which resulted in a significant loss of lives.
