A good 20th century black Japanned bureau bookcase in the George II style, by Maitland-Smith Limited, the broken arched pediment with three urn finials over a pair of arched doors enclosing an elaborately fitted interior with pigeonholes above drawers, document slides, folio compartments and further drawers above two pull out candle holders, the fall encloses a similarly fitted interior with a central door, above two short and two long graduated drawers raised on bracket feet, maker's lable to back 'Maitland-Smith Limited, Cabinet & Chair Maker, Kowloon, Hong Kong ', 108 cm wide, 56 cm deep, 220 cm high, the bookcase is japanned on the front and sides in black and gilt and uses a combination of raised and flat decoration depicting Chinese figures and birds in landscape settings
