Description:
Chinese school, 19th century, ink and gouache on paper of a panoramic view in great detail of Huangpu (or Wampoa) Encourage, 10 miles beyond Humen (or Bocca Tigris) in the pearl river Delta, depicting an extraordinary variety of vessels, including foreign ships of different flags, anchoring to unload their cargoes, and sampans ferrying the goods to Canton, 10 to 16 miles further up the river. Local farmers and traders depicted in the foreground, a variety of traditional Cantonese terraces across the river on the Huangpu Island, three famous pagodas used as navigation points afar against a stretch of hills. 26.3 cm x 19 cm. Provenance: Private Collection Victoria, purchased in 1975 from Galerie du Monde Ltd. In Hong Kong where the current owner resided at that time. Footnote: an oil on canvas by Chinese artist Youqua depicting exactly the same scene, dated circa 1850, is kept at Peabody Essex Museum, collection number Pem M4478;, another oil on canvas attributed to the same artist depicting the same scene, from a slightly different point of view, is kept at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, collection number AH1964.0047
