Silver mounted emu egg presentation vase by Edward Fischer, with grape vine handles and feet on an ebonised plinth with plaque, engraved: 'To/ Gen. John A. Ewart KCB/ From His Cousin/ Peter Ewart/ Geelong Jan.r 27th 1885'. Marks: E.Fischer/ Geelong to stem, ref: Jbh no 116. Height 33 cm. Provenance: private collection. Notes: General Sir John Alexander Ewart (1821-1904) was part of a military family born in camp where his father was a Colonel. He saw active service in the Crimea but it was India where he spent most of his professional career steadily moving up the ranks and suffering the loss of his arm. He was made a Companion of the Bath in 1859 and an aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria. On 12 January 1884 he was made a full General and received the KCB on the Queens jubilee, presumably 1887.
