Important Wellington (NZ) silver rifle Association Championship belt by Hislop & Co, with a central starburst medallion, initialled Rwa and dated 1886, with central crossed rifles and wreath, having a selection of nineteen dedicated silver plaques ranging in date from 1886 to 1916 with four further decorative appliques and buckle, (leather is split and broken). Marks : Hislop & Co. Combined weight: 930 grams. Approximate length 99 cm. Provenance: Vizard Foundation. Notes: a reference could only be found to a John Hislop in Dunedin who advertised as a watchmaker, jeweller and optician. He was born in Liverpool (Britain) in 1832 and served his apprenticeship between Scotland and England. He left for Australia in 1851 perhaps drawn by the gold rush but settled in Bendigo opening a shop. Certainly the 1862 Otago gold rush is given as the reason for him departing for New Zealand and he later settled in Dunedin to commence business there and to follow local politics. He died in his shop in 1900.
