Victorian silver cup for the Midland Agricultural Association by William Hattersley, embossed with floral bands and engraved Presented to James Maclanachan/ by the/Midland Agricultural Association/2nd October 1839/for the best draught mare/ in 2nd class. Marks: London 1840 maker Wh. Height 21 cm; weight: 475grams. Provenance: private collection. Notes: the Midlands is a plain in Tasmania lying between Launceston and Hobart., the recepient James MacLanachan (1799-1884) A Scotsman was trained in the keeping of livestock. Indentured to James Robertson he sailed for Hobart in 1821. On the indenture's expiry in 1824 he received a land grant and pursued his farming. He was instrumental in founding the Midland Agricultural Association in September 1838 (as is clear from the pair of trophies, lot 50) and was its first treasurer and secretary until 1875. This is a very early trophy for the association and for Australian historical silver in general.
