Description:
South Australian Intercolonial cricket trophy attributed to Wendt, surmounted with s single figure of a batsman, the drop in lid enclosing gilt traces, leading to twin angular handles and a elongated body having twin oval cartouches, one bearing the inscription- S.A.C.A./Intercolonial/1886/ Presented by T.Oliver. Esq/ for highest aggregate Score/ and Won by/ Chas.Godfrey/Score/118 Runs, the other an incised image of a batsman taking his centre; on a short pillar and stepped circular spreading foot, and an ebonised plinth base, profusely decorated throughout with scrolling foliage. Marks: unmarked. Overall height 36.5 cm. Provenance: private collection. Notes: an attribution could be possible here based on the batsman finial. In Jbh Vol II pp 94 a selection of Wendt's castings shows a very similar figure with only slight variations that could be easily done., the Saca was founded in 1871 with suitable grounds leased in 1872. By 1882 a grandstand had been built., there is confusion in the article of this match between Victorian and South Australia in the South Australian Register where it reports: 'Both the trophies fall to South Australian men, Godfrey taking Mr. J. W. Colton's prize for the highest aggregate scorer in the match with 118 runs, and Giffen has won Mr. Oliver's prize for the best bowling average.' March 16, 1886.
