English silver double handled Annual football trophy, with leaf capped handles and elaborately embossed with floral allegories of the British Empire and engraved on the reverse with: 'The Stewart Football Trophy', reverse: 'Presented By/ James Stewart & Co./ Rockhampton/ Won By/ Scottish Rifles Football Club 1887/ Mount Morgan 1888/ Mount Morgan 1889', together with it original ebonised plinth with plaque dated 1890. Marks: Birmingham c1885, maker Frederick Elkington. Combined height: 62 cm; weight without pedestal: 1425grams. Provenance: Private Collection. Notes: Alexander Stewart and Willaim Hemmant opened their first department store in Brisbane in 1860 expanding to Rockhampton in 1862. Perhaps around 1870 James Stewart took over the business and with his brother-in-law re-launched James Stewart & Co.which is still in existance today in Rockhampton.
