Carved ivory and silver mounted walking stick, the ivory carved with an Aborigine stalking emus and with engraved silver mounts, inscribed with: Sir Graham berry/ birth-day/ 28-8-93. Marks: unmarked. Length 87 cm. Provenance: Private Collection. Notes: Sir Graham berry (1822-1904) was born 28 August near London. He migrated with his family to Victoria in 1852 where he operated a store in 1854 he was on the jury that aquitted the Eureka rebels showing his protectionist ideals as he slowly began to dabble in politics. His purchase of the Collingwood Observer newspaper in 1860 gave him a voice and platform to launch and focus on his media and political career otherwise abandoning his other private enterprises at that time in 1861 he had his first political success when elected to the Legislative Assembly also occasionaly holding the treasury office in different capacities. His first premiership of Victoria came in 1875. By the 1880s he became increasingly active for a federated Australia. He receive his knighthood in 1887 for his effort in organising the Colonial and Indian Exhibition.
