Silver 'Waterloo' presentation ewer by J. M. Wendt, baluster shaped with angular handle and on circular foot, engraved with 'South Australian Coursing Club/ Waterloo Cup/ May 1893/ Won By/ Mr Fc Pearce's/ Faundog Port Admiral /By Heirloom-Red Hind III/ Bred By Mr C Pearce Kent Town'. Marks: Jm Wendt Adelaide (Crown) (lion passant) (Victoria). Weight: 925 grams; height 43.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection. Note:A similar example see Hawkins Vol II pp 91. Coursing is the sport of greyhound racing that has a long tradition in South Australia, the first Australian coursing club was established in Narracoorte SA in 1868 holding the inuagural 'Waterloo Cup', the South Australian Coursing club was established in 1875, perhaps as a response to the rabbits that were released only shortly before. It too established a Waterloo cup at Buckland Park (both cups take their name after the famous British cup), which was the premier greyhound race and was first raced in 1884. at that time the prize money was 80 Pounds, a trophy and an oil portrait of the winning greyhound.
