Unusual silver Roller Hockey (polo) trophy by George Armfield, surmounted by a lone figure of a hockey player in full stride wearing skates, the stained egg capped with pierced mounts, resting on a disc support and a finely engraved stepped circular base. Marks: G.Armfield/ Collingwood/ Sterling/ Silver to base and marked on finial. Height 35 cm. Provenance: Vizard Foundation. 2001 Geelong Exhibition no 1. Notes: George Armfield emigrated from Great Britain to finally settle in Melbourne in 1867 and learned his trade under Wenzel & Enes. He opened his own premises in Collingwood in 1878. Roller skating became an increasing popular sport in the 19th century. By the late 1850s rinks were appearing in Britain with the first roller polo or hockey game being recorded in 1878 on the Denmark ring in London. Skating rings existed in St Kilda and Melbourne in the 1870s and 'Polo' took hold probably in the 1880s as it reached the US by 1882/3.
