George 1st bronze sundial by James Clowes, London with engraved sun/face dial, outside border marked ‘Amyddst ye flowers I tell ye hours, ‘Tyme wanes awaye as flowers decaye’ ‘Beyonde ye tombe freshe floweres bloome’ ‘Soe man shall ryse above ye skyes’ ‘James Clowes Londini fecit 1716’ 25.4 x 25.4 cm. Note: James Clowes, a member of the Worshipful, Company of Clockmakers, is recorded working from the time of around 1671, with later engraved brass mount, marked E. Esdaile Sydney, 1918 Edward Esdaile, was an Instruments manufacturer, who set up business in hunter St, Sydney 35.6 x 35.6 cm. Provenance: Portesham house Dorset Capt. Thomas Hardy, by descent Capt.
