Thomas Aldworth (Darby) Ryan (1864-1923), ‘Ohinemutu Village & Lake Rotorua’, watercolour, signed and inscribed to J. (James) Cowan and dated 1896. Ryan worked as illustrator for Cowan, the author and historian on his first book ‘Taupo and the Volcanoes’ published in 1901. This view of the Ohinemutu settlement, figures cooking, steaming vents and St. Faith’s Church in the foreground and Mokoia Island in the distance is a more fully resolved work similar to the chromolithograph illustration from the publication: The Way of our Grandfathers’. Conserved, framed and glazed.
