A late 1940s New Zealand made picture table showing the World War II hospital vessel ‘Oranje’ under sail, also displaying islands of Indonesia and Borneo, inlaid and decorated with various timbers, the shaped rectangular top under glass raised on quarter round chamfered legs. 60.5 x 38 x 480. Our vendor’s father served on the Oranje as a New Zealand soldier. She was the largest hospital ship operating from Australia serving for five years throughout theatres of World War II completing 41 voyages. Our vendor’s grandfather was a cabinetmaker and probably made this table.
