A large and impressive polychrome wood figure of Guanyin, Chinese 17th/18th century. The Bodhisattva of infinite compassion seated in Dhyanasana wearing a Crown with a central image of a Buddha. Her hands in the dharmachakra mudra, the gesture which denotes the first teaching given by Buddha Shakayamuni. This mudra signifies the setting in motion of the Buddhist wheel of teachings. Traces of original paint remain. Height 98 cm. Provenance: This fine and early figure of Guanyin was collected by the current owners in the Shanxi province in central mainland China and has been held in their collection for many years.
