An early/mid-19th century Maori carved patuki (wooden hand club) 'Of a Higher Ranking Person', the square section blade with fine linial and notch repeat carving and with a band of 12 detailed manaia and koruru masks, lobed grip and a stylised full head carved to the butt, good colour and patina. Length 41 cm Provenance: gifted to Dr Cooper from Eltham, Taranaki region, c. 1850 by local Maori as payment for medical treatment and show of the esteem with which he was held, then by family descent. Inspected by Roger Neich with letter of description on Auckland Museum letterhead.
