A fine Japanese Cinnabar Lacquer octagonal incense box and cover, 19th century, Edo period. Very well carved with nine pomegranates, including three on the cover, amongst leaves and buds, the tall-sided black lacquer base with a two-character signature. 3.5 cm high, 5.6 cm diameter. In a silk purse within a Japanese wooden box, inscribed and with a note: 'This container was prepared for the Master of the Scroll Den, end of the summer, 1847'.
