A Victorian sterling silver presentation trowel by John Kilpatrick, London, 1874 with ebony handle, the blade engraved 'Presented to Mrs. Charles Shuter As a Testimony to Her Earnest Work in Aid Of, the Building Fund of Holy Trinity Church Greendale of Which, the Rev. Frederick Smith Is, the Minister October 16th 1876' 30 cm. Length, fitted case. Note: Greendale's holy Trinity church was never completed and now contains only a chancel and vestry. Local folk law has it that Andrew George Scott, a lay reader from, the nearby Egerton church of England, preached at the church in 1877. Later Scott was charged for, the robbery of Egerton's Chartered Bank and appeared in court before, the Magistrate Charles Shuter Pm, the husband of the recipient of this silver trowel. Scott took, the moniker, Captain Moonlight (or sometimes Moonlite), and became one of Victoria's most notorious bushrangers in partnership with James Nesbitt, a young man he had met in prison. Scott's final request before he was hanged in 1880 was '.To Be Buried Beside My Beloved Nesbitt, the Man Whom I Was United By Every Tie Which Could Bind Human Friendship, We Were One in Hopes, in Heart and Sole and This Unity Lasted Until He Died in My Arms.' His Request Was Not Granted At, the Time, But His Body Was Exhumed in 1995 and Re-Interred Next to Nesbitt's Grave
