An antique Shirvan hand knotted rug, wool on cotton construction, the field with four conjoined diamond form medallions with latch hook borders on a deep blue field with scattered motifs of various guls, stylised birds and emblems, multiple border guards with fine geometric repeating designs, tones of red, blue, tan and orange. 192 x 112 cm re-fringed, showing some signs of wear. Provenance: from the collection of Mr J. Bamford-Smith, owner and M.D. of Celebes storage Co. Ltd, England. Bamford-Smith was in charge of the defence of London 1940-1941 against the German forces. As a major collector of rugs in London during the early 20th century, he compiled, illustrated and described his collection in the self-published book 'Oriental Carpets and Rugs', 1925. This Shirvan offered is illustrated in this book. By family descent to the current owner.
