Peary North Pole Expedition: Kawin (Chicago) postcards No.2 (Deaparture of Commander Peary), No.3 (Steamer 'Roosevelt'), No.4 (Commander Peary and Captain Moses Bartlett), No.5 (The Crew and Captain of the 'Roosevelt'), No.8 (Commander Peary in his Library), No.9 (Commander Peary's wife and children) & No.10 (Commander Peary and his youngest son, Robert). This lot and the subsequent groups of Kawin postcards were issued in 1909 and illustrate the controversy then raging over the competing claims of who got to the North Pole first: Dr Frederick Cook, who claimed to have reached the Pole in April 1908 or Robert Peary, in April 1909.
