Description:
An important silver koro modelled as a wooden drum, Meiji period, with Ozeki seal mark, signed Inshi Koku sen, with gold seal of Motonobu (1847-1897), one side decorated with Fuden, the wind God and the reverse with Raiden, the thunder God, throwing lightening bolts, the details in gold, copper, shakudo and shibuichi, the silver cover surmounted by a lion-dog with details in gold and silver, gilt handles, supported on a circular base with stylised dragons chasing a flaming pearl,original wooden box. Height 22 cm. Depth 16 cm. Provenance: An old Sydney private collection, Literature: see Barry Davies Masterpieces of Meiji Metalwork, cat No. 23, for another metalwork sculpture by the same artist, with the same inscription and seals; also see Victor Harris, Japanese Imperial Craftsmen, Meiji Art from the Khalili collection, British Museum press, 1994, No. 16, p 41 for a Ozeki metalwork screen by the same artist; also, No. 18, p 43 for another example by Inshi Motonobu.
