A rare pair of Arita vases, Genroku period (1688-1703), supported on Louis XV ormolu bases, each one moulded in the form of Benkai, the hero riding a huge carp as it leaps through waves, decorated in green, black and aubergine enamels, iron-red and gilt, 24 cm. Benkei was a hero during the 12th century and was nicknamed Oniwaka (young demon). He is often seen exhibiting great feats of strength
