A very rare Chinese ivory brise fan, early Qing,18th century, finely painted in gouache with a pair of minor birds and a pheasant on a flowering branch, signed lower right, Franco Chiari, water gilded wooden frame, canes approximately 22.5 cm long, there were a number of Jesuit priests and artists living in Peking in the 18th century, from the reign of Kangxi onwards, including Castiglioni. One must assume that Chiari was one of that legion, the decoration on this fan is reminiscent of the painting on the famous birthday plates of the Kangxi emperor
