An extraordinary large and rare horn from a white rhinoceros, Collected in Nairobi in 1858 by the vendors great-grandfather in 1858, one side marked in stencil: Hp 30- for Henry Paxton 125 cm long base 20 by 19 cm with very old paper label still attached to the base that is hard to read: This horn +++ extinct rhinoceros Simus WA+++ England in 1858, after the death of my brother the late Henry Frederick Paxton, who + as+wa were informed' in his last ++ illness expressed a wish that it should be sent to England to his father. Its ++ believe, an unusually fine one. See Royal natural History volume 2?, the vendor has provided the following: the horn is from a white rhinoceros, the old term for the species was Simus, the modern term for it is Ceratcatherium Simun. It weighs approx 5.5 kilos. It's length is 1.27 meters. It was bought by one of my relations in Nairobi. He saw it in a shop and was told it was an exceptional horn and possibly of record size. His initials Hp are on the side of the horn, the horn was sent to England in 1858 and then to Australia in early 1970, through the Australian customs service, who inspected it at the time on it's arrival. on the bottom of the horn are the remains of a very old paper label. 84 x 200 x 90 cm
