A good brass telescope by T. Peacock belonging to Captain R.C. Hammond. The 98 cm tube engraved: T. Peacock, 11 Shortland St. Auckland; with single extension tube, rack and pinion mechanism at fault, 7.5 cm objective lens with small chips. Raised on 43 cm tall tilt and swivel tripod based table stand. Glaswegian, Thomas Peacock optician and instrument maker emigrated to Auckland in 1862 and operated from Shortland Street until election to the City Council in 1878. He became Mayor and subsequently Mp for Auckland City North, Newton and Ponsonby until 1890. Captain Roland Christian Hammond was manager of the Northern Steam Ship Co from 1921, following Capt.
