Housed in a modern custom made aluminium case, the folio was originally owned by George Gordon and Calder Oliver and is a collection of proof maps and plans with notes added prior to publication, they fall into 2 main groups: 1873-1875 and 1888-1894, there are over 70 goldfields maps and plans including many supurb multi coloured lithographic versions, and most are rare. Coverage includes Ararat, Ballarat, Beechworth, Creswick, Castlemaine, Sandhurst (Bendigo), garden Gully, Gippsland, Mitchell river, Dundas, Borong, Ripon, Reedy Creek, Russell's Creek, Stawell and more, there are also some 40 maps and plans prepared for the Brisbane, Ennogera and Magill water Supplies. (Perhaps pertinent to the recent Queensland floods?). Included in this section are many maps and plans prepared for the Victorian water Supply Commission, there are also some early railway bridge designs for Williamstown and some exceptional coloured designs for mining and railway systems and reservoir outlet towers. George Gordon (1827-1907) arrived in Victoria and became Victoria's first qualified hydraulic engineer. Most of the maps in the folio date from the 1873-75 period when Gordon was designing reservoirs, water races and surveying mines. This early work established his name laying the foundation for a successful and rewarding career. in 1876 he married violet Eddington, the daughter of the wealthy Western District squatter Captain Eddington (after whom the township Eddington is named). George and violet Gordon moved to Toorak where their mansion, Ellerslie, still stands today. Apart from the main office in Melbourne, George Gordon at different times established branch offices at Macedon, Daylesford and swan Hill. in 1887 he was President of the Victorian Institute of engineers. Calder Edkins Oliver (1855-1930) was also a civil engineer. His expertise was bridge design. Oliver's works in the folio date from the late 1880s thru the early 1890s. By the late 1890s Oliver had combined with Sir John Monash to design the first large concrete bridges in Victoria. Calder Oliver was President of the Victorian Institute of engineers in 1895 and from 1907 thru 1919 was the Engineer in Chief of the Melbourne Metropolitan board of works
