Description:
Calendar Diary, military Paperwork, Photos and Pay book etc. For John Grant, N.Z.E.F. This includes his non-commissioned officer’s certificate from the Wakatipu mounted Rifles and his commission as an officer in the New Zealand hand Forces 1911. John Grant was born 5 March 1883 and served in the Boer war as corporal number 4530. Back in New Zealand he became a sergeant in the Wakatipu mounted Rifles on 1 February 1908 and was commissioned as a second Lieutenant 25 March 1911. He joined the N.Z.E.F. (number 29688 30 June 1916) and was sent overseas on 21 January with the 21st Reinforcements Otago Infantry Battalion D Company. This is where his diary begins ... He left New Zealand on 21 January 1917 and arrived in Albany on 1 February, Capetown on 19 February, Freetown on 19 March and finally reached Sling Camp England on 29 March 1917. During April he mentions Sling Camp, London and Godford Camp before being sent to the front in May. He experienced life in the trenches and shell fire at Messines Ridge. This included going over the top in the battle of Passchendaele on 4 October and being wounded by a shell in the right arm. He spent time recovering in both hospital and a convalescent camp before rejoining his unit in late October 1917. He spent Christmas in a German pill box where he was subjected to shell and machine gun fire whilst ill. Finally he was admitted to hospital with influenza and seems to have remained unwell until the diary ends, the pay books show that he later went on to serve through 1918-1919. He was discharged 17 September 1919 after serving 2 years 214 days.
