A World War I New Zealand mounted Rifles signal’s Troop Diary, kept by 18372 Trooper Frank Montgomery Oliver of grey Lynn who embarked with the 20th Reinforcements (mounted machine gun Brigade) 16 December 1916, the diary commences as he departs Wellington then, however, stops for essentially a year, the diary comprises an almost daily account of campaigning in Sinai and Palestine with the Auckland mounted Rifles in 1918. Engagements with the Turks are well detailed including the attacks on Jericho and Jerusalem. Oliver records the numbers of killed and wounded in each engagement and it is an interesting insight into campaigning in this sometimes forgotten theatre of World War I conflict, the diary ends at the end of 1918, when it appears Oliver is commencing his return home. A rare somewhat tattered survivor.
