Herbert Ponting (1870-1935): 'Weddell Seal (Diving Off the Ice. Cape Evans, March 15, 1911)', c1911, silver gelatin photograph (44 x 60 cm), the photographer's blindstamp 'H.G.Ponting' at lower right, titled and numbered '35' on the fine Art Society labels on the backing board and on plywood back of original frame. (Ponting was the first official photographer to be sent to the Antarctic. He joined Scott's Expedition in 1910 and sailed on the 'Terra Nova' on June 15th. His large works are scarce and highly prized, especially in such fine condition.)
