A rare miniature medal group, the New Zealand Cross and the New Zealand Wars Medal, both awarded to Cornet Harry Wrigg, the New Zealand Cross with traditional applied gold wreath, crown and buckle, both with original ribbons, both displayed in a Spink & Son leather case. Provenance: ex. the collection of Lt Col Tom Wallace. The lot including a pamphlet ‘Souvenir of the Veteran’s Home Bazaar’ 1903, signed by Wrigg to the cover. Note; Harry Charles William Wrigg was born in Wexford, Ireland and died in Auckland. He served with the Auckland City Council as a Borough Engineer and was responsible for much of the design and layout of the city in the latter part of the 19th century He was awarded the New Zealand Cross in 1898 while serving with the Poverty Bay Volunteer Cavalry, supposedly for carrying despatches through ‘country infested by native tribes then at war with the British’ (quote from official citation). This award was the most controversial of the 23 awarded.
