A naval chronometer by James Sweetman Eiffe, 3½’ gilt dial engraved Eiffe, South Crescent, Bedford Square, London. Also bearing the name ‘The Founder- Guard’, below the up/down (36 hour) dial, a subsidiary seconds dial at VI, blued steel hands and Roman numerals. Eiffe, an eccentric 19th century chronometer maker gave proper names to his chronometers - ‘Arctic Circle’, ‘The Hydrographer’, and this example ‘The Founder-Guard’. Gimble mount and case absent.
