Description:
Rare Hand painted Silk Scroll, ‘Kakejiku’, Edo Period, Tosa School by Tosa Mitsuyoshi 1700-1770, with original ivory weight at base and silk brocade strips at top. The Tosa School was founded in the 15th century and became an official art school of the Imperial Court in Kyoto. Quails as a painting subject were a specialty and its paintings employed delicate brushwork and colouring. The translation says Fujiwara Mitsuyoshi (Major 5th rank in service to the court). The scrolls are painted on silk. A similar painting by Tosa Mitsusada son of Mitsuyoshi is held in the British Museum. Tosa Mitsuyoshi was head of the Tosa School. Length 175 cm. Width 44 cm. (2 Quails). (One original box which holds the two scrolls.)
